Okay strait to business since I am a month behind on this blog.
Pick-up number 5 was delayed due to our trip to visit Elaina's paternal grandparents in Nevada. She had a great time and even collected bottles from them to bring back to California.
Sadly between pick-up 5 and 6 one of our neighbors down the street was shot while walking his dog with his son and is now paralyzed. My sweet girl decided to pass on her earning she would make from the combined #4/5 pick-up to the family. I put out a facebook request to our E.S.T.W friends and they responded by absolutely filling my car with recycling. It took us multiple days to sort the types of recycling, remove all the bottle caps, smash the cans, count it all up, bag it, then finally take it all to the recycling center!
The #5/6 pick-up yielded 331 cans, 255 plastic bottles, and 29 glass bottles! (Plus and additional 16 juice pouches for her school recycling)
My favorite memory from the #5/6 was on Halloween as we were trick-or-treating with friends, Elaina stopped what she was doing and got excited about finding an empty water bottle by the sidewalk to add to her recycling. I mean, seriously what kid abandons the thought of getting to the next house for more candy to pick up someone else's litter? Oh yeah, mine! : )
Pick-up #7 was a bit different since it was Veterans day which meant no school. Elaina and I had the opportunity to go to the LA Zoo that morning with her best friend Hailey and her aunt who got us in using their membership. The two girls had a blast and even found 3 water bottles in the process. That evening we did our normal rounds in a different order, and had a wonderful surprise just as she was in need of a break from being in the car so much that day.
A fairy ring on Heidi's front lawn! She had a great time playing for a bit, but it is a good thing we got going when we did because it started raining gigantic drops as we were doing our last stop for the day.
The totals for pick-up #7 are: 126 cans, 145 plastic bottles, 9 glass bottles, and 4 juice pouches! Not to shabby for a holiday.
In other "Elaina Saves the World" news, she now officially has her very own savings bank account set up to help her save for college and her elephant adoption fund. She also has her own cash lock box here at home for the portion of cash she gets to keep and spend. It is great watching her start to recognize the different types of coins and which section they each belong in.
